The Jewish community’s annual Yom Hashoah commemoration will take place in person on Sunday 27 April at 6:45pm for a 7pm start at a Sydney CBD location (details provided one week prior). Parking and convenient public transport options are available.We will hear in-person from Dr. Helen Lewis, daughter of British army combat cameraman Sgt. Mike Lewis who filmed the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, including the image shown on the flyer. Sgt. Lewis’s footage was the first ever use of film as corroboratory evidence in a war crimes trial.The candlelighting segment will include short videos featuring this year’s Holocaust survivors – Ana De Leon, Gaby De Leon, Dasia Black, Jack Meister, Lucy Chladek and Paul Drexler. We will hear music from the incredibly talented Ben Adler and Paul Khodor from Chutney Unplugged, and the beautiful voice of Sasha Fisher. Earlier that day, the annual Memorial Service and Reading of Names will be held on Sunday 27 April at 10:30am at the Martyrs’ Memorial, Rookwood Cemetery. We will hear from Prof Ruth Balint on the migration experience of Holocaust Survivors to Australia following Liberation in Europe. We are excited to announce that Brave Talks will be held on the North Shore this July and is currently on the lookout for speakers.If you have a lived experience of mental health and are willing to share it with, and inspire, our North Shore community then please contact s.kezelman@jewishcare.com.au to explore the opportunity.Brave Talks is an event that privileges the wisdom of lived experience. Through the art of storytelling and the power of holding a safe space, our understanding of mental health is deepened. Both the speakers and the audience become empowered by the resilience of the human spirit and an opportunity for healing through human connection is created.
